Dumbbells are one of the key pieces of equipment for any gym.
Unfortunately, without proper dumbbell storage, they can take up quite a lot of room. Not to mention, inadequate dumbbell storage leads to dumbbells on the floor, which creates a safety risk and gives your gym a much more cluttered look.
When looking at dumbbell storage stand solutions, you really have two main rack stand options - horizontal or vertical dumbbell racks.
Let’s compare the two dumbbell storage options:
Horizontal Dumbbell Storage Racks

These are by far the most common type of dumbbell storage stand solution on the market.
Generally, they hold anywhere from 5 - 100 lb dumbbells; however, some can handle even heavier.
These are great for storing plenty of dumbbells against a wall, out of the way, typically underneath mirrors with a few adjustable benches nearby. Depending on the size of your gym, you are probably going to need anywhere from 1 (hotel gym or home gym) to 6-8 (commercial gym) for your dumbbell storage. Typically, these rack stands come with two rows; however, many rack stands have an option for a 3-tier system.
This can be great for extra storage space of dumbbells.
If you are looking to get some kettlebells off of the floor, some racks have an 3-tier option specifically for kettlebell weight storage.
Within this category, you have another rack option as to how the dumbbells are stored. Some racks have individual slots for each dumbbell weight storage, allowing greater organization for the weights. Other racks are one continuous storage rack, allowing for greater use of space for the weights, as the individual slots often are the same size regardless of how large the dumbbell is.
Typically, the slots look better, but the continuous rack likely will give greater dumbbell storage for the gear.
Vertical Dumbbell Storage Racks

These weight racks are typically found in smaller gyms or in gyms that don’t have quite as heavy dumbbells.
The vertical dumbbell storage rack stand looks like a dumbbell tree and typically will hold 50 lb dumbbells max. They look somewhat similar to weight plate storage units. From a user experience, these weight racks are great for smaller weights; however, when using heavier dumbbells, the weight racks are a little bit more difficult to get dumbbells in and out of. These dumbbell storage racks will take up less floor space, but are not able to hold as heavy dumbbells as the horizontal weight rack stands.
Both storage rack products are easy to assemble, making them perfect products for your dumbbell storage needs. Be sure to double-check the weight capacity of the rack before purchasing, making sure that it can handle the total dumbbell weight you anticipate using it for.
